Where to Stay in Indianapolis
Your guide to the best areas and accommodation types
Indianapolis is built around the Mile Square downtown core. Here the convention center, sports venues, and nearly every major hotel sit within easy walking distance. Head northeast on Mass Ave for boutique properties. Broad Ripple lies five miles north with a village feel. Outside these corridors, short-term rentals dominate.
A solid mid-range double runs roughly $130-180 on ordinary nights. Downtown luxury climbs toward $350 during the Indy 500 and major conventions. Budget chains on the outer corridors and airport strip start around $75.

This is the original platted square mile at the city's heart. Monument Circle and the Indiana Convention Center anchor it. Roasting pretzels scent the air from street carts near the circle. The low thrum of crowd noise rolls off Lucas Oil Stadium on game nights. Nearly every major Indianapolis hotel, Gainbridge Fieldhouse, and the White River State Park museum campus sits within this walkable grid.
- ✓ Walk to every major Indianapolis landmark without a car
- ✓ Dense restaurant and bar options along Georgia and Washington streets
- ✓ Indoor skywalk connects multiple hotels directly to the convention center
- ✓ Monument Circle provides a free, spectacular public gathering space
- ✗ Weekend event surges make street parking nearly impossible. Rideshare surges run high.
- ✗ Rates spike sharply during Indy 500 week and major convention dates

Massachusetts Avenue slants northeast from downtown like a fault line through the grid. Independent galleries, chef-driven restaurants, and the Bottleworks District line the street. The former Coca-Cola bottling plant now anchors the mixed-use neighborhood. Charcoal smoke drifts from restaurant vents to theater marquees. Neon glow catches the polished brick underfoot on wet evenings.
- ✓ Denser independent restaurant scene than anywhere else in Indianapolis
- ✓ The Bottleworks Hotel is the city's most architecturally distinctive property
- ✓ Short rideshare to Lucas Oil Stadium and the convention center
- ✓ The Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library sits in the corridor. The Phoenix Theatre does too.
- ✗ Street parking in the arts block fills before 7pm on weekends
- ✗ No grocery store within the immediate corridor for self-catering stays

Five miles north of downtown along the Monon Trail sits Broad Ripple. Indianapolis's compact entertainment village packs bars, live-music rooms, yoga studios, and casual restaurants. All flank the White River. River damp hangs in the summer morning air. Distant bass thumps from half a dozen venues announce Friday nights before you leave the trail.
- ✓ Direct Monon Trail access for running or cycling into central Indianapolis
- ✓ Calmer weeknight atmosphere than the convention center blocks downtown
- ✓ Local coffee shops within a four-block walk. Record stores too. Independent boutiques complete the set.
- ✓ Newfields and the Indianapolis Museum of Art are a short drive away
- ✗ No full-service hotels sit in the village itself. Nearest chains are on the 86th Street corridor about a mile north.
- ✗ Rideshare increase pricing runs high after 1am on weekends

Southeast of downtown, Fountain Square is the city's scrappiest creative district. Repurposed 1920s commercial buildings now hold vinyl shops, queer-friendly bars, duckpin bowling alleys, and murals. Color covers entire facades visible from two blocks away. The neighborhood smells of old wood and fresh paint in equal measure. Duckpin pins clatter out of the theatre on weekend afternoons.
- ✓ The most eclectic bar and live-music scene in Indianapolis outside downtown
- ✓ Duckpin bowling at the Fountain Square Theatre is hard to find anywhere else in the city.
- ✓ Seasonal mural walks are free and change throughout the year
- ✓ Lower accommodation costs through short-term rentals than anywhere in the downtown core.
- ✗ Hotel supply in the district is thin. Most visitors book short-term rentals here. Others stay downtown and rideshare over.
- ✗ Some blocks feel quiet and underlit late on weeknight evenings

The pocket between the IUPUI campus and White River State Park holds the Indianapolis Zoo, the Eiteljorg Museum, the NCAA Hall of Champions, and Victory Field. Cool air off the White River drifts across the zoo path on summer mornings. The low roar of the crowd floats from the baseball diamond on summer evenings. It is the city's most family-oriented accommodation zone, west of the downtown hotel grid.
- ✓ Walking distance to the Indianapolis Zoo, Eiteljorg Museum, and the NCAA Hall of Champions.
- ✓ Quieter than the convention center blocks while still inside the downtown radius.
- ✓ Victory Field, widely regarded as one of the finest minor league ballparks in the country, is steps away.
- ✓ The canal towpath connects directly to Broad Ripple for a scenic walk or ride north.
- ✗ Fewer casual dining options immediately around the campus compared to Mass Ave or the downtown restaurant corridor.
- ✗ Street parking disappears entirely on event days at Lucas Oil Stadium, one mile east.

The cluster of properties surrounding Indianapolis International Airport and running along the I-465 loop on the southwest side forms the city's value accommodation zone. The hum of jet engines is a constant low note from the nearer hotels, and the smell of jet fuel arrives on wind shifts. Almost entirely full-service chains, the corridor compensates with easy highway access, free airport shuttles, and rates that reliably undercut downtown Indianapolis by a significant margin.
- ✓ Free airport shuttle from most properties in the corridor
- ✓ Consistently the lowest hotel rates in the Indianapolis metro
- ✓ Easy westbound access to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway via I-465
- ✓ Several full-service properties have indoor pools and fitness centers
- ✗ No walkable food or entertainment; a car is mandatory for every meal and activity.
- ✗ The visual landscape is entirely strip-mall suburban with no Indianapolis neighborhood character.

Booking Tips
Insider advice to help you find the best accommodation.
Indianapolis hotel rates during the 500 Festival in May and the Formula 1 race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in October double or triple across the metro, and downtown properties sell out entirely. Book as soon as race dates are announced, typically five to six months ahead, or plan to stay in the airport corridor and drive in.
The Indiana Convention Center hosts major national conferences nearly every week of the year. Rates in downtown Indianapolis jump when a convention is in house and fall the moment it ends. Arriving the morning after a large convention concludes rather than the morning before it starts can drop the going rate by 30 to 40 percent for an identical room.
Indianapolis has an indoor skywalk system connecting the JW Marriott, Westin, Hyatt Regency, Conrad, and several other properties directly to the convention center and Circle Centre Mall. When January temperatures drop and wind cuts across the downtown Indianapolis blocks, that covered connection is worth more than proximity on a map.
Neither Fountain Square nor the Broad Ripple village has traditional hotels inside the neighborhood boundaries. Travelers who want to sleep in those areas reliably use short-term rental platforms. Inventory is plentiful and nightly rates typically fall below the downtown Indianapolis midpoint.
When to Book
Timing matters for both price and availability.
Lock in May rooms five to six months ahead for Indy 500 week. October's Formula 1 race demands the same lead time. Any week with a major convention in the Indiana Convention Center needs at least four to six weeks. Plan early.
March through April and September through October give Indianapolis its finest weather. Rates run 20 to 30 percent below summer peaks. No race-week surges appear. These are the sweet spots.
January through February and mid-November through mid-December bring the lowest rates in the metro. Walk-ins work reliably in the airport corridor. Most downtown Indianapolis properties accept them outside convention weeks.
Two to three weeks covers most ordinary Indianapolis weekends. Any major sporting event, the 500 Festival, or a large convention needs four to six months of lead time. Book accordingly.
